There was a time, when I wasn’t entirely sure what this meant. Intellectually I understood the words, but I wasn’t really doing it. And you know that old zen saying, to know, but not to do, is not to know. Well that was me. And yet it’s really, really important to get this, to do this, if we’re to have any alterations in our current circumstances.
Don’t get caught in the same old routine
You might say, hey I meditate, I make the time and effort to vizualize and I practice affirmations. All well and good. There are so many advantages to all these practices and you know I do them all.
But think about this for a minute. You’re investing time in imagining the best things ever: wonderful relationships, fabulous health, great happiness and joy, and financial freedom, woohoo.
Then you go about your business, thinking the same old thoughts you’ve always had, and surprise surprise you’re getting the same old results you always got.
Hmmm, would you say there’s something wrong with this picture?
Practice thinking from
What we need to do is think from the place that we have this wonderful life, instead of thinking of it. The average person defines his dreams but he remains back here looking at them. It’s a bit like buying a house, but never occupying it. If we don’t occupy the state of our dreams, radiate from them, thinking from them, as though they were real, it makes it harder to get them.
Whatever thoughts you opt for, you are sending messages to your subconscious – this is what I want. And when repeated, with feeling, your subconscious proceeds to offer you evidence of the truth of what you want, and sometimes what you don’t want…we’ve all experienced that! You’ve got to admit, its a pretty great system.
Begin at the ending
We begin by defining the end, the place where everything we currently desire is here, and then we feel we are that person, who has those things. We mentally enjoy our fulfilled desires.
We must stay focused on what reason denies, what our senses deny, and proceed in that assumption, knowing that even though it doesn’t confirm itself tonight or tomorrow, by continuing to live in the assumption that we are what we want to be, it must and it will become a fact in our world.
Choose what’s ideal for you
The last time we bought a house, we didn’t have a clue how it would come about. Mortgages were tough, money was tight and in the world of ‘facts’ it didn’t even seem a remote possibility.
We still decided that our outcome was that we lived in our ideal house/home at a great price, and on ideal terms. Whatever that looked like. It didn’t matter to us if we rented one or bought one…our end was simply that it was ideal for us.
How to make it work for
So I said, well if this were true and we were about to move into our ideal house what would I be thinking about and the first thing that came into my head was I’d be thinking about who would help us move, what would be the best time to move, and how shall I organize the packing.
Now these might not be the thoughts you’d have in similar circumstances, but this is pretty organized thinking for me…I’m a teeny bit proud of it!
We didn’t even have a house in mind. But I stayed focused on how we loved our ‘ideal home’ and how easy our move was. Every night before I fell asleep I imagined being in our bed in our ideal house and how that felt…pretty darn good I can tell you.
Tune in and listen to yourself
Within six weeks or so…I’d have to check with my Darling One for exact dates, we’d found a house, our Realtor organized a great deal and we moved in. True story.
Just to keep it real, not everything we desire falls into place quite this quickly and quite this easily…but it could, if we would tune in and listen only for what we desire to be true. And remain faithful to this new thinking, preventing our old thoughts from returning
To get something you’ve never had, you have to be someone you never were and this means that your thoughts must stem from the place that you are the one who’s desire was fulfilled. And you know what…if we can do it, so can you.

The concept of manifesting things by seeing what we want as done isn’t new to me. But when you changed “thinking OF it” to “thinking FROM it,” something in me shifted. It was a big Aha! moment for me. It’s amazing how one word can make all the difference in creating a truer understanding. Thank you so much for that Elle!

This post really resonted with me, and I hope you don’t mind I linked it as my favortite post of the week. I especially love your line ‘To get something you’ve never had, you have to be someone you never were’. That sums up what I had to accept in my life this past week. But more that to get what I wanted I would have to live the person I was not showing myself to be to people whose opinion or approval I was still waiting for and instead leave those people behind. I would be new to them, but not truly to myself. Just love that line.
Nice to see you Lee. The most important thing is to know that it all happens in our imagination first…and then the outer experiences appear. This is all about mentally occupying the state we desire to see. The becoming then just is…. 🙂
Becoming what we desire is something so much different than just imagining or hoping to be prosperous. There is a feeling tone that comes along when we really are in a prosperous state of mind, though looking beyond our immediate surroundings that may not exude this success is the tricky part. I believe it all comes down to having faith no matter the circumstances.
Thanks for the comment Joe. I agree with you that faith is an integral part of the process, especially for the things in life where we’ve had long held beliefs of the opposite nature.
You make some really killer points here. The thing that drives me crazy about manifesting/law of attraction stuff is it often doesn’t address what I call “getting dirty” which is to dive into the fear and doubt and facing challenges that will arise along the way in going for something bigger in our lives.
Like you said really tapping into that core desire and staying the course with it is critical. Plus keeping integrity with your word and taking consistent action to support what you want to manifest is SO important. Of course that doesn’t sound nearly as sexy as “have anything you want by just believing it” – but it’s what I’ve found out (the hard way) about manifesting. Affirmation and belief must be embodied in one’s entire beings – it can’t just be words on a paper. I’ve tried that stuff and while it works somewhat in the short term, if that core desire isn’t underneath then it quickly fades away.
P.S. I am a HUGE advocate of mindfulness meditation, because it is training to bring that quality of mindfulness into every waking moment of one’s life. Meditation is all for naught if that same quality of deeper consciousness, isn’t carried and practiced in “real” life.

You’re right on the money when you say that we trying to have nice thoughts and do affirmations on the weekend, maybe, but when we get back in the real world we’re back to normal, back to the beginning. That is, in my opinion, why people who practice the Law of Attraction fail pretty miserably. My opinion is that we dont’ attract what we “want” (as in passing fancies, whims, etc.) but rather what we are (our strongest, deepest desires, be they fair or foul).
The only contemporary course on the Law of Attraction (or “The Secret”) that’s any good is The Secret of Deliberate Creation by Dr. Robert Anthony. He takes Napoleon Hill’s famous book and recasts it for a modern audience.

I agree John, we absolutely don’t attract what we want, but who we are.
Some things come easily if we don’t have a lot of beliefs and feelings to the contrary, others…well we have to stay in the new state of mind before anything new materializes.
I haven’t read the book you mention, but will definitely take a look at it.
I can highly recommend Neville and The Feeling Is The Secret, or any of his books. He takes the LOA to much deeper places, and did it long before the LOA became even remotely popular. He’s not the easiest read (so I’m told) but boy can he take you places you’ve never even thought of!
