Mark Twain said “I’ve been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.” I noticed this habit in myself the other day.  We had some news that didn’t make me particularly happy. Okay, it pretty much made me really, really upset.  And I didn’t stop there.  Oh no sirree.  In my mind I assumed it would get worse.  I had imaginary conversations with a variety of imaginary people.  Well they’re real people, but I was just imagining them in my mind.  You know what I mean. I had all sorts of thoughts that in and of themselves were…just that…thoughts, but I accepted them, I dwelt on them, I even managed to magnify them.  Imagine that! I was heading down the rabbit hole.  No I was definitely in the rabbit hole and it was pretty dark in there.  I felt sad.  Wow.  That’s no surprise given the…

Chances are that every day you shower, and brush your teeth and try to do something with your hair. Oh no, wait, that’s me.  You might have different bathing habits, but still, chances are you do something towards keeping that great bod of yours clean and well cared for. Even if it’s not jumping in the lake, I bet it’s a habit you never give a second thought to.  You just do it, it’s a physical action you take.  You have a habit of thought that leads you to act. Our habits of thought might be hard to catch in our mind, but they are ‘writ large’ all around us;  in every event and circumstance we encounter, in every person we’re involved with, in every action we take. That’s the good and the bad news.  It’s good because all our thoughts are out there in all their glory for…

My Darling One used to be a body builder.  Not a champion in the strict sense of the word, but he trained with Mr. Korea, if that counts?   He’s still a gym rat, dedicated to keeping fit. And all this discipline is difficult for a whiny, do I really have to walk today…its too windy, kind of girl, like me to grasp.  The dedication and discipline required just to build a regular old bod, let alone a Mr. or Mrs Korea is beyond my ken.  (ken…not a name, just a Scottish expression for that’s beyond my tiny mind to get around.) What about this?  Muscular, much?  And dedicated?  Incredibly so.  Disciplined?  Most definitely. To lead a bigger, grander, greater life, we all need this.  No, not the huge muscles…it’s the training, the dedication, the discipline I’m talking about. And it’s not our body that needs training.  Well speaking for myself,…

Why was I pondering Universal Laws?  Because it tried to rain on me this morning.  What a nerve! I usually wait until there’s some light to walk by before I venture out,  Dawn’s early gleaming and all that.  After all there might be a panther or big black snake or some other creature that I haven’t yet encountered in this Florida paradise.  And yes, they’d be lining up just waiting for me, come on you know they would. But it got to be past seven and dawn wasn’t even glimmering, let alone gleaming, so being the stoic Scot that I am, I went for it.  Five minutes out it dawned…on me…not the world, there still wasn’t a gleam, because any glimmer that might have been, was hidden behind big, black, ominous looking clouds.  That explained why it was so dark past seven o’clock.  Obviously and naturally, they were waiting till I…

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.”  So said Calvin Coolidge.  And it made me think about Christmas gifts.  I know, I know, it’s a bit late in the day and all that, but truth be told there’s plenty of time for gift giving.  Here’s an idea or two, if you’re a little stuck, or a little overwhelmed, or even if you’re feeling a little sad. For children, the gift of praise. For a parent, or relative, the gift of your time. For a friend or even a stranger, an act of kindness. For a community, lend a hand. For our world, a prayer for peace. For yourself, the gift of love. Christmas is love in action, the time when people show their true selves,…
