If your life sucks, it’s a wake-up call.
Maybe it isn’t your whole life that sucks.
Maybe only one area of life and not every area feels like a living hell.
No matter if it’s your relationship, or money or you’re just not feeling good, you don’t have to put up or shut up. You don’t have to continue to live a miserable life.
And even though we can’t just put our life on hold and walk away, we can take this wake-up call as an invitation to stop wasting our energy on following a course that doesn’t work for us.
When you stop doing things that are wrong for you, you give the things that are right a chance to find you.
And that sets your new course to begin your better life.
So here’s some loud-and-clear reminders of how to stop sapping your energy and undermining the quality of your life, because when anything in life sucks, even if it’s only now and then, this is what happens.
Stop putting your attention on things that suck
Inner peace begins the minute you stop allowing other people or life experiences to control your emotions. Remember pain happens to us all in our life, but suffering is optional.
Keeping your attention on mistakes of the past. Or dwelling on difficulties or the obstacles you might possibly face is a request to your subconscious to produce more of the same.
“How would I feel if I was living the life of my dreams?” is the idea which should dominate your thoughts if you’re stressed out by anything external, or when life feels particularly tough.

Train your mind to start to see the good in life, even when it doesn’t go as planned, and you’ll begin to rewire your brain. And when your brain is working right, your whole life is working right.
Stop thinking the whole world rests on your shoulders
Just in case you’re uncertain about this, it’s not your job to keep the whole world from falling apart. Yes you have dominion over your little corner of the universe, but your dominion doesn’t extend to the whole cosmos.
Try being a little more laid back the next time you think something in your world is about to fall to pieces without your intervention.
Because when you try to head off every potential problem at the pass you tend to create more problems. Instead, you are challenged to change your inner self. And that changes just about everything.
Here’s Deepak Chopra and Oprah talking about maintaining positivity when going through hard times.
Start feeding your soul
Do whatever you need to support your self-care. Your quality of life and the lessening of that ‘my life sucks’ feeling depends on a soul that is well-fed.
You are probably more careful with just about every other area of life than you are with what needs to be your most prized possession. Your spirit.
Everything that happens in life that’s good, everything you do that feels great, everything you feel that blesses your life depends on a soul well-fed.
You may not end up leading the precise life you want, but feeding your soul leads to a more meaningful and sometimes miraculous life experience. It pretty much comes with a guarantee.
Make the choice each and every day to stop doing – and start taking time to renew yourself.
Start to live today
If feeling happy rests on what is going to happen one day, you’ll end up missing all the days in between.
By all means go after your goals and dreams, but enjoy the journey. Make it fabulous. Don’t make life all about going and getting. Wherever you go, you will be right there, just make sure your heart is with you on the journey.
Embrace all the steps you take, even when it feels as though you’ve stumbled a little. Be okay with that. Sometimes roads get a bit bumpy.

But by enjoying each step and leaving space for the universe to create its magic when things seem to go wrong, you won’t be blocking the way for new and unexpected things to go right.
Final thoughts on dealing with life when it sucks
At the end of the day, each moment comes with a choice. Carlos Castenada learned something we all could well follow…in life there are two paths to take, one with the heart and one without. (If you would like to know more you can find it here)
And since it’s impossible to know what the future will hold, one thing we can be certain of, by choosing the path with heart our life will be blessed.
Choose the path that is in alignment with your values, your dreams and your desires, understanding that your heart is the light of your world guiding your way.
Choose the path without heart and your life will probably suck.
At the end of the day, the power and choice lie in our own hands.
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. How do you manage those portions of life that just seem to suck?

Hello Elle, I’m fortunate because I have quite a nice life. I would say that only part that “sucks” is living with a chronic illness. I love your first piece of advice because in some ways it’s so obvious but we fail to see it: “Stop putting your attention on things that suck.” That can apply to illness too. The less I think about it the better! Thanks for these ideas.
I hear you Sandra – think health is one of the tricky ones. It’s truly hard not to focus on it when you feel rotten, or you hurt. But as you say the less attention you give it and the more attention you give to the bits and pieces that are healthy and work well, the better off we are. 🙂
Our attention is the power we all have to sculpt our brains and our lives. Our attention creates our realitiy – todau and tomorrow. If we focus on things, as you say, that suck, that is where we are putting our energy and momentum. It is a choice to focus on the good that does existand grow it. It ‘s always there if I look.
Love that phrase Debbie, sculpt our brain and our lives. Our consciousness is definitely the maker of our reality and as you say focus on the good and you’ll find it.
All day every day we have the opportunity to make choices, even if that choice is simply how we choose to see or feel about something. Fold the laundry or spend time with your kids? Get more work done or go outside and take a walk alone or with your partner? These small choices make up our days which make up our lives.
The points you make about what we focus on are critical. This is how I transformed my life: using daily gratitude to focus on the good.
I like your choices Paige. Fold the laundry or spend time with the kids. Kids grow up and go their one way, laundry folding will be there tomorrow. Love how you transformed your life with daily gratitude practices.
Hey Elle –
Nice article !
A couple things really resonated with me: 1) train your mind to see the good in life 2) choosing the life with heart our life will be blessed. . .
Almost everyday, early in the morning as the rest of the family is still asleep, I do a walking meditation that is focused on being aware of the incredible beauty of being alive. And then as my day unfolds, I try to remember to be filled with and to come from that awareness.
Please keep the good news coming !
Wow that’s so impressive Ty. What brilliant days you must have in your world.
