We all want to know how to stop feeling miserable on those days that start with us feeling totally down, blah, a little blue, or cranky and dejected.
If you’re a part of humanity, chances are high that you have felt or are feeling miserable. Who hasn’t had days that start with feeling down, blah, blue, or cranky and dejected? Sometimes without even knowing why.
But whatever the reason, it doesn’t bode well for the day ahead, and knowing it isn’t the path to enjoying life makes it feel worse. But before you jump back into bed and hide under the covers, take heart.
There is something good in all that misery you’re feeling. You’re aware of it.
And even though it might not seem like it, this is a good thing. Without awareness, nothing can change. Of course, awareness doesn’t mean that what you’re dealing with will disappear. Still, it gives you a better chance for a positive, hopeful future.
Because the secret to truly enjoying life lies in our ability to choose something other than what we’ve been selecting. Even though often, that choice was unconscious.
Being fully aware that you have a choice of how to feel or what to think is where your power and your less miserable, more enjoyable life dwell.
The thing is that wherever you’re investing your energy is how you’re investing in your life.
Without awareness, we have no power to choose, respond, or change.
And knowing that it’s possible to change the state of mind you’ve been dwelling in, it might be handy to know how to do this. So here are two simple ways to that awareness so you can tap into your invisible power for change and start enjoying life again. Awareness is the foundation for building less miserable, happier days and a more enjoyable life.
Become a guardian at the gate of your mind
The most significant influence in how we’re going to feel and what we’re going to do tomorrow lies in what we take into our minds daily. That mental diet we feed on day in and day out. And this everyday mental diet causes our misery or our joy. It’s a hidden factor that determines our success or failure, happiness or misery.
Many years ago, Jim Rohn said:
‘Stand guard at the door of your mind.’
Standing guard or becoming a guardian at the gate of your mind simply means that it’s up to you not to allow things to enter your belief space unless they support you in your best life and make you happy.
You must become the quality control director of what enters your conscious mind to ensure only what you desire can enter.
An easy way to start this habit and give your mind a healthier diet to focus on is to find something positive to read or listen to. You can find audiobooks and podcasts to listen to and plenty of books to read with uplifting content that will help provide positive energy for your mind to feast on. And if you see something else, that will do the same for you. Go for it.
If you’re thinking, what the hell if it were this easy to become the master of our destinies, we’d all be living a great and fulling life.
True enough. I get that.
But most people have never heard of the idea that they have the power to choose what they allow into their lives. Or that they are the givers of meaning they bring to their lives or that anyone can choose to live mindfully or choose what they will accept or believe to be true in their life.
Yet the truth is that, whether you are aware of this or not, you are supreme within the circle of your own consciousness. And it’s within that consciousness process that your life’s dramatic production is enacted and re-enacted.
Mind-blowing as this thought might be, it’s your consciousness that is the driver and maker of everything in your world. So make it your mission to ensure that you make a choice for yourself of what you allow your consciousness to be focused on.
If you truly want to be less miserable, stop living life the wrong way round
We’ve all learned to live life through our senses, sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste.
Looking at our bank statement, we see the state of our finances. Or we toddle off to the doctor’s office, where he tells us about our physical health. And we accept it all as the immutable truth about our life.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Years ago, I was told I had a condition that was the precursor to cancer. As you can imagine, this was pretty shocking, but after a while, I thought to myself. Hold on. This is a perfect time to practice what you preach. So I did. And even though it took a long time to reverse this condition, and it was tough not to believe what my mind kept telling me I had heard. I transformed it.
The point of this story is that I knew I could assume what I wanted since nothing was set in stone.
And challenging as it was, each time I had a fearful thought, I made it my mission to prevent my mind from accepting and believing what I didn’t want. And I did this by continuously affirming the more positive outcome I wanted to experience.
I chose not to live from the outside in but from the inside out.
The power of Imagination
Imagination has been called the most miraculous, powerful energy of all.
Use the gift of imagination to build any life you’d love to live.
Think of it as the jumping-off point for creation because wherever we go in our imagination, we must physically follow.
It’s one of the principles of universal law.
Your life will get a lot easier when you delete the negativity that makes life difficult and begin to imagine the life you’d give anything to live.
Because all you need to give is permission for your imagination to work its magic.
Ask yourself, how do I really want to live? Then let your imagination take you there.
So choose wisely. Starting now.
Let today be the day you call into action the power of your imagination, and let it create the ways and means to help you grow yourself out of all limitations, all misery.
You can do this. Your imagination is as powerful as those of the greatest minds in the world. Let it loose.
It’s time to get over what’s making you miserable and start enjoying life again. A life you’ve chosen to build. The life of your dreams.
Remember, As Joseph Campbell put so well:
“When everything is lost and all seems darkness, then comes the new life and all that is needed.”
Encourage one another.

Hi ElleSommer
Thanks for letting me vent! I will keep rereading this post. And the comments really help too! It helps to know you’re not the only one going through this.
Wonderful advice! Thank you for sharing this Elle.
This post reiterates what I know to be true and what science proves. Our minds and thoughts create our experience of this life. While we cannot control what happens or circumstances, we can control our minds and what we say to ourselves about what happens. As you perfectly illustrate, there is our power to choose happiness.
Nice Post.Thanks for Sharing
“You have a choice of how to feel or what to think”
I read that in your article a few days ago and this morning remembered to put it into practice. As I got out of bed and was beginning to move around a bit, I felt stiff and sore. Suddenly “out of the blue” I remembered your quote and I told myself there and then that I wasn’t going to allow myself to feel that stiffness and soreness all day. It was not going to be part of my day or direct my actions. And by jingle, it worked ! Now then I didn’t realize it worked until late in the afternoon when for some reason I thought back to my early morning self-dialogue. WOW !
I look forward to reading more of your articles.
Oh wow – I’m so happy to hear this worked for you Ray. Thanks for sharing.
