The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of consciousness into our awareness.
Lao Tzu
Coming from a country where for centuries kings and queens issued decrees, I’m very aware of royal proclamations over their subjects. Not that modern monarchs have this ability – good job, since those decrees didn’t always work out so well for everyone. Off with their head, was pretty commonplace, and not just in Alice in Wonderland.
And for those of us who read fairy tales as kids you’ll remember how often the king – and yes it was always the king in days of yore – would decree something; making proclamations about glass slippers and such.
What I never realized was how much we are all decreeing things over our life.
Man can decree a thing and it will come to pass.
Neville Goddard
The sort of decreeing that I’m talking about is of the spiritual kind. Which in turn becomes a decree over our entire life; over every experience we have, every person who shows up, and all the ‘stuff’ that appears or disappears.
The secret of an abundant, prosperous and truly happy life
Isn’t in what you have. It lies less in our possessions, and more in the consciousness of who we are and what we have in our consciousness. This is how decreeing over our life takes place.
We, all of us…and yes that means you, possess everything, right now.
And right about now, you’re probably thinking oh yeah, where is it then?
Well we only get to experience what our consciousness allows us to see. We only get to see what we believe to be true for us.
We are forever decreeing in consciousness. We don’t even have to speak the words, just to think the thoughts and feel the feelings and wham there’s our proclamation.
We are the ones who make these proclamations. Sometimes purposefully, oftentimes not quite so much. Yikes.
So desiring something and having thoughts of doubt or fear or uncertainty means we’re decreeing those experiences. The one’s we truly don’t want.
What’s in your mind right now?
We’re conscious of being miserable or happy or sad and lonely or filled with vitality or drooping with tiredness, or joyful, or poor or abundant, or….you get the picture. And the proclamation is made. The deed is done.
Consciousness is the power that manifests everything in our world. And we can only manifest that which is in our awareness. That which we can accept and consent to as true for us. Never mind about other people…it doesn’t have to be true for them.
Sitting here reading this, you are drawing into your consciousness everything that you’re accepting as true for you…or not as the case may be.
As I write these words I’m drawing them into my consciousness. Now they may just flit in and then flit out again, in which case no harm, no foul. On the other hand they may join a host of other ideas in our consciousness and become ready to bear some beautiful fruit. Or something less than lovely.
Focus on the wonderful
So, feeling unhappy or discontented with something in our world, by using our consciousness of being, we get to rise up in consciousness to a new state, a higher state; a state which holds the very thing we currently desire.
How do we do that? We take our attention away from the thing that bothers us. We stop poking at it, as we choose to focus our consciousness on the opposite of botheration. We choose a feeling more in keeping with the fulfillment of our desire.
We can’t serve two masters. We can’t have our consciousness attentive to what we don’t want and what we do want at the same time. And I say thank you, thank you.
In other words we must be willing to die to the old state and be born again in the new one. We have to let go of those problems or resentments or upsets and focus our attention on something better, something greater, something really wonderful. Totally accepting that we can have days of ease and peace and joy.
The two most powerful, life changing words
And help is at hand. The two most powerful words at our disposal are I AM. As we say I AM this, or I AM that, we’re conditioning our unlimited consciousness. In other words we’re decreeing that the very things we say we are, get drawn into our life experience – become manifested in our world
The one and only way to change our experiences in life is to change our consciousness of being, because our world in it’s every minute detail is our consciousness expressing itself. And blooming heck, it does it all by itself, with nary a bit of help from us.
Which, when you think about it, is actually good news. That means that we equally don’t have to help our consciousness when we’re focused on a new state of being. And, in my case, this is a marvellous thing, because mostly I have no clue what I need to do to get what I’ve decided I want to experience.
How about you?
What are you willing to let go of in order to be reborn into your new, more magnificent state of consciousness?
What can you focus on right now and tomorrow and the next day…even if only for five minutes…that’ll start the shift into that new state of consciousness.
What do you want to decree over your life? Choose wisely. This is a fairy tale of your own making and you get to decide the happily ever after.
Remember:
It is only possible to live happily ever after on a day-to-day basis.

It is truly, I think, therefore I am, yes?
I recently realized that I am content. I am doing all the things I love, which having filled that bucket, allowed me to be full and fully present with my children – my other bucket. Before, I was scattered, disorganized and disoriented, unsure what I am, where I was. But once I got down to the basics, decided to do what I love, decided that I WILL be happy, I made it happen, naturally.
It’s a good place to be.
Welcome to the conversation Alison, so nice to see you here. Good for you kiddo, doing what you love and choosing to be happy…wow, what a great place to be. Add to that you’re funny to boot – just read your post. Looks like you’ve got it all going on for you. 🙂
I strive for happiness in my life as well as peace and joy. I have had to change, or I would spend way too much time being anxious. As you read and learn more, you take the tools that work for you and that will help you rise to a higher level of consciousness, I knew I wanted to be still for a period each day so I began a meditation practice. I knew I needed an outlet for my thoughts, so I started writing a journal. I knew I could use my body to calm my mind, so I went back to running and other forms of exercise to keep my body moving. It continues to be a work in progress, but changing a few habits has helped me change my life. Take and thanks for the great post!
Oh so true Cathy – as I’ve studied various spiritual principles and put them into practice, not only has my self concept changed, but so has my life…surprise, surprise. I love the techniques you’ve put in place to keep you growing in the direction you want to go. So inspiring. 🙂
“This is a fairy tale of your own making and you get to decide the happily ever after.” I love this – powerful post Elle! I’ve always said we’re making it up as we go along! You so clearly outline what took a (Secret) book to say in just these words here! Now,,, what do I want to decree in my life today? 😛
Lori
Hello Lori and thanks for visiting and joining the conversation and for your kind words…and I have to ask myself that very same question every single day! 🙂
Elle –
I will never forget what George Harrison said – perhaps in one of his last interviews – that the purpose of life is to prepare for death. It may sound morbid- but in fact, he was right on target. All spiritual teachings talk about going on the spiritual journey- understanding that our bodies are only a cover for our souls -which are infinite.
The highest level of energy/light/consciousness is knowing that death is the next step in the journey -that it is not only inevitable but should be treated with the greatest respect~ Supposedly Steve Jobs last words were ‘Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.’ His sister, who wrote the article said that he had clearly moved on and was entering ‘what was next’. 🙂 Fran
Hello Fran – I loved the video Martin Scorsese did with George. I think perhaps life is entirely a spiritual journey, we can just get distracted by the world of senses which is so delightful that we sometimes forget. 🙂
Hi Elle,
You say, ” We take our attention away from the thing that bothers us.” this is very true if we are wanting happiness. Whoever i have found that when i can not take my attention away from something, I look for the positive side of the situation. it is electicty there is always a positive and negative. It is a matter of putting your energy where it is going to do the most good.
Thank for sharing these wonderful thoughts. We all deserve happiness. We just have to stop chasing it and let it catch us.
Debbie
Hello Debbie – that’s exactly it, by putting your attention on the positive, you’ve stopped fueling the fire of what you don’t want. Happiness is our natural state really, and just up and jumps in our pocket if we let it. 🙂
Hi Elle,
I believe in the power of positive thinking. Employing it can help to propel us toward our goals. I remember the years that I spent working during the day and studying at night. To reach the end and graduate, I needed to convince myself (or decree, as you put it) that I wasn’t too tired to go on, that I was bright enough to grasp that difficult concept which brought about despair, and that I would look back one day and say that it was all worth it. But I would caution that there is a fine line between a positive and focused consciousness and delusion.
I eventually made it to the finish line, but many who I knew did not. For some, it may well have been a lack of commitment or a failure to envision their dream, but for others, I suspect, it was simply beyond their abilities. It happens, and I think that we should allow for that possibility to occur without attributing the defeat to a lack of consciousness, drive, or motivation. Giving up one thing that isn’t working frees us to try something else.
Hello Ray – it’s done unto us as we believe. 🙂
Ellle,
I love this post! And I love the words, I AM. They have become my mantra over the last year. I really believe our thoughts make our life so this is why your post really resonates with me. I also love your quotes, too. Especially the Margaret Bonnano quote.
Thank you for your lovely… And my Kung Fu master, I promise to chose wisely.
xoxo

Thank you Elle – It was refreshing to be reminded of these things again. Seems like I never get tired of hearing them. I especially liked your reminder of “I am” and what we’re decreeing every time we say it.
I’m writng a personal manifesto for a proposal at Seth Godin’s “Change This” site and that’s what it’s all about — declaring what is important and meaningful in my life and intentions on what I’m doing about it. It’s different when you write it down and put it to words.
I’ve seen that Pat, your personal manifesto I mean…and you’re so right…it’s entirely different when we put it into words. I’m sure it’ll be a huge success. 🙂
Thank you Elle. Appreciate your words of encouragement. 😛
