Be honest.
You sometimes have odd, random thoughts that come out of nowhere. Don’t you?
Surely I can’t be the only one to have odd, random and oftentimes strangely bizarre thoughts flitting through my head?
I can’t even share most of them because of the abject humiliation I would feel if everyone, no make that anyone, knew how bizarre they really were. I might have to move back to the country that birthed me, such would be my embarrassment.
So when I see quotes like this, it makes me cringe, maybe I should flee the country after all.
“I’m bored’ is a useless thing to say. I mean, you live in a great, big, vast world that you’ve seen none percent of. Even the inside of your own mind is endless; it goes on forever, inwardly, do you understand? The fact that you’re alive is amazing, so you don’t get to say ‘I’m bored.”
― Louis C.K
Wikipedia says this about Louis
Louis Szekely (born September 12, 1967), known professionally as Louis C.K. is an Emmy and Grammy award winning stand up comedian, television and film writer, actor and director. He is the star of the FX comedy series Louie, which he also writes, directs, and edits.
So here’s this man, awash with awards and apparently a brilliant writer, actor, director…oh what the heck brilliant at everything he does probably, telling me I don’t get to say ‘I’m bored’. Maybe I should listen to him…but I don’t because it’s what I say, and fairly frequently. It would seem that my bizarre, random thoughts sometimes become a habit of speech.
Use boredom to your benefit
Sitting at traffic lights, I say to my Darling One, I’m bored with this red light…and voila it turns green. Waiting at airports for delayed flights…same thing, eventually the thought I’m bored shows up and naturally I must speak it. Announcement is made, we’ll be boarding in fifteen minutes.
Expecting a package, the day will come when I say I’m bored waiting for this, I thought it’d be here by now…a minute, well maybe two minutes later the doorbell will ring and said package will be sitting there. No the package didn’t ring the bell the UPS man did. He’s very nice, rings bell, leaves package and disappears.
My Darling One thinks I’m something of a genius…I hesitate to tell him it’s just one of my random thoughts that happened to turn into habit. And according to Louis C.K. a bad habit at that.
Words and feelings
Given a chance, and it’s slim to none, I would tell Louis not to get so caught up in the words, but pay more attention to the feeling behind them. When I say I’m bored, what I’m actually saying is it’s time this…whatever it is….came to an end. I’m saying I’m expecting something right now. Something good, something better, something I want.
These might not be the exact words that would work for you…but whatever your words are, if they’re working, don’t give them up just because some brilliant someone interprets the words in a different way, at least not until you recognize the feelings behind them.
Encourage one another.
Love Elle.

Hi,
Again… Very Nice Post…. i confess .. a couple of minutes ago… i told to my colleague ….I am Bored … and see… i get your post… From now it is my resolution not to say..I am Bored… instead i am planing to make a change and make a Quote —- “I AM LOVING IT”.. like a McD’s berger . I feel making a good and positive Quote for such situations is the best remedy.
Its Burger… made a mistake…
Those old expressions from who knows where sometimes do have negative connotations in our world…we can’t go wrong with your I Am Loving It…think of the fabulous vibration we’re occupying…makes me smile as I read your words. Thanks Amy.
Dear Elle ,
thanks for appreciating my words… but hats off to u… i read about u few sec back… gr8… the inspiration for happy living, the joyful world created around yourself by “U”… Awesome …. i also want to be so strong … to make my own world full of joy, happiness and positivity… so glad..to c personalities like u… who have the zeal to live happily ever in any situation…
In our Hindi Cenema (Bollywood) there is a famous line— DUNIYA ME KITNA GAM HAI..MERA GAM FIR BHI KAM HAI… Meaning is — there is plenty of sorrow around the world, in comparison to that our sorrow is too little ..
This line itself is a complete guide for a positive thought…
Enjoying a lot…
Amy….
I think Louis is probably speaking of the “I’m bored” that my kids utter on occassion. They’re usually very good at playing together and making up games with just about anything (they won’t let me recycle cardboard boxes because of the infinite possibilities). But when they’re not together, I seem to hear it more often. Rather than expecting something specific now, they’re expecting me to dream up something fun for them now. They need interaction.
They’ve explored the 2% of toys in their “great, big, vast world” of their own toys and want someone to show them a new game or give them a new idea.
Being the mom of three little ones gives this saying a whole different meaning. Your meaning actually never would have occured to me. Thanks for broadening my horizon Elle!
I think you’re exactly right Paige…it was just the perfect quote to make the real point…no matter what anybody else tells you…it’s what it feels like to you that matters, be it words we use, or things we do. The feeling is what brings us the result we experience. Anything we accept or consent to as true becomes part of our consciousness thus part of our world, so we need to pay attention to what we let in!
I completely agree with you on that! Too many people believe almost anything the “authority” figures tell them (educators, politicians, doctors, etc.) regardless of the motives or actual information behind the words. Taking the initiative to do a little research of our own reveals a completely different story.
How we feel about anything determines our reality.
And boy can I attest to that Paige…that was me…someone in ‘authority’ said something…it had to be true. It took a while before I realized I needed to be my own authority and not simply accept things at face value. I like your words “taking the initiative to do a little research of our own reveals a completely different story”. Love the conversation…thank you.
I love this Elle. You’re so right that it’s not about the words. It’s the meaning, the feeling, what I’m moved to say/do.
Elle,
Wow! I am impressed by your summoning skills 🙂
I love when things like that happen. You are simply more in the flow than most, it seems…
I can do those little things easily Julie…a lot of practice. Am working on having the bigger things appear that quickly. 🙂
“Can you feel it”?…I remember the music video by The Jacksons…cutting edge in it’s day…sorry, I digress…how can we ever get bored?….too much ‘Life’ going on
be good to yourself
David
Cute David, great phrase of yours, too much Life going on, like it a lot.
In my opinion you are spot on in your assessment that it is the “feeling” behind the words that is important. The phrase ” I’m bored” can be filled with lack and limitation just as easily as it can be filled with the expectation of desires fulfilled.
Thank you for another stimulating article.
Write on, Elle !
Dear Elle,
A very interesting article. I am glad i read this article its an absolutely new dimension that you have given to the boring bore. I mean who could think that the silent message is that you are expecting something to happen.
I also liked your article The Ultimate Happy Life Recipe: Real Answers, Real Ingredients, Illusion-Free. its very well written.
DO you even write about subconscious mind ?
Hi Manoj and am glad you enjoyed the post. I don’t think the ultimate happy life recipe was one of mine though! 🙂
